Matson (University of British Columbia), who worked extensively in the area as part of the Cedar Mesa project. I discovered among the artifacts an ancient tattoo tool and then conducted extensive analyses on it, working with several other WSU researchers. We concluded the artifact dated to about 2,000 years ago and is the <a href=\"https:\/\/cas.wsu.edu\/2019\/03\/01\/grad-student-discovers-oldest-tattoo-tool-in-western-north-america\/\">oldest tattooing artifact<\/a> in western North America.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"163\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3206\/2020\/01\/TatooTool_2506-web.jpg\" alt=\"Ancient tattoo tool.\" class=\"wp-image-409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3206\/2020\/01\/TatooTool_2506-web.jpg 800w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3206\/2020\/01\/TatooTool_2506-web-396x81.jpg 396w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3206\/2020\/01\/TatooTool_2506-web-768x156.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3206\/2020\/01\/TatooTool_2506-web-792x161.jpg 792w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This discovery resulted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2352409X18307508?via%3Dihub\">publication<\/a> in the <em>Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports<\/em> in February 2019. The story garnered widespread attention from national and international news media, including <em>National Geographic, Newsweek, Smithsonian Magazine, Archaeology Magazine, National Geographic History Magazine<\/em>, and a Utah Public Radio podcast as well as many international agencies, such as <em>Stern<\/em> magazine, <em>National Geographic Spain, CBC Radio, Al Jazeera, La Vanguardia, Les Cahiers de Science &amp; Vie<\/em>, and <em>Illustreret Videnskab Historie.\u00a0<\/em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/Tattoo-News\">See the full list.<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In total, I did around 22 interviews with different news and science organizations.&nbsp;It was definitely an amazing experience and not one that I will ever forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nancy McKee retires<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"396\" height=\"264\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3206\/2020\/01\/McKee-web2-396x264.jpg\" alt=\"Nancy McKee.\" class=\"wp-image-434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3206\/2020\/01\/McKee-web2-396x264.jpg 396w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3206\/2020\/01\/McKee-web2.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Associate Professor Emeritus in Cultural Anthropology, Nancy McKee, an anthropological linguist and cultural anthropologist with a specific interest in inequality and poverty, retired from WSU in May 2019. She taught for more than 30 years in the Department of Anthropology after earning her PhD at WSU. McKee was a pioneer in WSU\u2019s distance-learning program, offering classes through various digital media until her recent retirement.
