Cochineal ‘Beetle’ Dye

A tiny “beetle” was the guest of last Thursday’s ANTH 340 class taught by Rachel Horowitz.
The course, Maya, Aztec and Inca civilizations, explores these past cultures.

With help from the Entomology department, class members gathered in College Hall to demonstrate how the tiny female Cochineal insects (not actually beetles) were ground and used as a dye by ancient peoples.
