Research Interests

With formal training in environmental anthropology, theatre, and chemistry, I am a transdisciplinary ecological anthropologist guided by the premise that equity and justice are fundamental to more sustainable futures. Transdisciplinary research is purpose-driven, collaborative knowledge production among diverse societal actors. My research at the food-water nexus examines how human behavior and wellbeing affect and are affected by interrelated sociopolitical, ecological, and technological processes in the context of changing climates. I collaborate with researchers across disciplines, policymakers, technical experts, artists, and local communities. My long-term goal is to increase socioecological justice across scales through community-engaged scholarship and by preparing the next generation of scholars and leaders to develop collaborative solutions to the pressing challenges of our time.

I have conducted research in Northeast Brazil, the US Southeast, and the US Pacific Northwest. Building on my expertise in water governance and sustainable agriculture, I am developing projects to examine interconnected crises of anthropogenic climate change and plastic pollution. My scholarship integrates approaches from the critical social sciences, natural sciences, and arts, including qualitative methods (e.g., participant observation, interviews, and archival research), quantitative surveys, hydrological monitoring, and community-engaged theatre.

I welcome the opportunity to advise students in diverse geographic and cultural regions, including across Latin America, the Iberian Peninsula, and the United States.
